Bernese Hound

About Franz

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Rescue ID: 1477
Take a look at this stunning Swiss boy! This is Franz, a purebred Bernese Hound, also known as a Berner Laufhund, an 800-year old breed from Bern in Switzerland. This is a very rare breed here in the US, and 6-month old Franz is a wonderful representative and certainly one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen. But Franz doesn?t just have the looks! He is a true little miracle, as his mother was rescued from the pound and no one even knew that she was pregnant! After being placed in a loving Paw Placement foster home, she gave birth to Franz and his 12 siblings on May 17, 2006. His mother took great care of him and his brothers and sisters, but unfortunately developed a serious mammary infection, which meant the puppies had to be bottle-fed. Franz was the smallest of his brothers, and when he weighed about 3 pounds last June, we were thrilled! Needless to say ? just look at the pictures ? Franz has grown a lot over the past few months, and is now a healthy 55-pound lad with a stellar personality. He LOVES other dogs and enjoys nothing more than running and playing with his doggie friends. Franz also gets along great with cats. Franz is house-trained with a doggie door. He likes to sleep on his nice doggie bed, and does not get up on the furniture unless invited to do so. He rides well in the car and lies down while you drive. When on a walk, he loves to sniff everything in typical hound fashion. He has a very gentle, sweet demeanor and likes to be petted and loved on. Overall, Franz is very respectful well-behaved for such a young puppy. He rarely jumps up on people, has a beautiful sit and would love to learn even more. Since he is still a puppy, he will need some more obedience training to round out his wonderful personality. He can be a bit protective of his food at times and will need to be taught that there is no reason to be. But since he is such a smart boy and a quick learner, this should be a snap. Since he is so fond of other dogs, Franz should be part of a multi-dog household. He would make a great dog for someone who enjoys running, as he has been on several 4-mile runs and did very well! Franz is truly remarkable and will make an excellent addition to a loving, caring and patient family who is willing to provide him with all the things a young fun dog needs. Franz is sure to return the favor a million times over.
