Two volunteers went into the pound knowing we could rescue THREE CATS! That's it . . . just THREE CATS, no more. But the list of animals to be euthanized was long. And we did bring four cat carriers. Deeeeeeeeeep sigh, ok, we decided to rescue four. So with our carriers loaded up with lucky cats, we began the most depressing walk out of Animal Care & Control. We walked the long corridor of animals who would never leave the facility alive. Both of us had a carrier in each hand, trying not to make eye contact with the frightened animals crying out to us. And then I made my fatal mistake. I looked directly into the eyes of a beautiful big cat. He rolled over on his back and extended his fluffy paw through the bars at me. And that's when I made a spur of the moment decision. We were leaving with FIVE cats. So, into a borrowed carrier, we put Pilot. All the way to our safe cat house, Pilot made kitty bread in his carrier. Everytime we turned around to assure our new cats that all was well, he chirped back at us with happy purrs. And when he was finally settled on his cushy bed, with a belly full of wet food he let out a little low meow. "Thank you," he said to us. Then he closed his little kitty cat eyes, let out a content sigh and fell asleep. We named him Pilot because he is a big, sexy kitty who looks like he has lived his life in the fast lane. But he is very ready to settle down. He is looking for a home where humans will love him for his lifetime.
